THAT IS AWESOME!

4 year old boy’s reaction to the reveal at the end of ‘Empire Strikes Back’.

I’m reblogging this video because I have a problem with it. The problem of authenticity.

This video is cute. Almost too cute. Upon first watching, it’s the greatest YouTube video and blows David after the Dentist out of the water. But that right there is the problem. It’s designed to be an amazing YouTube video. The only thing this video is missing is a cat in the girls lap. The unfortunate thing is this video is staged. How could it not?

The most obvious part is the kid looks directly at the camera upon the unveiling with an open mouth to basically ask “Dad, am I doing this right?”. The second tip off is the girl. She is older so she is trying her hardest to look disinterested before the reveal. Playing with her feet trying to take her mind off of her own featured role. Her reaction is quick too. Like i did it and now I’m done. The boy holds for too long as well, starts contorting his face to try and hold it. not real.

This. This is real. This article was written by the awesome film commentator Drew McWeeny, who I have had the fortunate chance of knowing from my days of film festivals and press junkets.

This guy loves two things. movies and his kids and family. Anytime I talked to Drew he would always have an amazing, formulaic opinion on a film i’d inquire about and he’d and always bring up the coolest stories about his kids.

Check out his article for the most sincere post about sharing a film with your kids. Here are some real bits I enjoyed.

Film Nerd 2.0: We finally reach The Moment with ‘Empire Strikes Back’ on Blu-ray

  • How the kids don’t know  genre convention, and they fully accept that the hero of a film could die at any moment.
  • The boys were confused by the idea that someone’s friend [Lando] might betray them
  • Toshi asking ““Daddy, you wouldn’t ever be mad at us and kill us, would you?”“
  • How they realized that adults might not tell the truth, and that the world might not be what I they are told.

check it out if you care. if not keep sharing this viral video on Facebook, Twitter and Tumblr.
